Beautiful Borage

With nature being full of beauty and surprises, it is no wonder it brings forth an herb which not only looks beautiful in the garden—attracting bees like a moth to a flame—but it contains numerous benefits, making it something one should have in the garden.

Borage.

Said to be introduced by the British, this beautiful herb, with its star-shaped blue flowers is an instant attraction for bees, and a pleasant addition to your garden. And why wouldn’t it be eye-catching? A lot of us—myself included—are mesmerized by stars, and having a flower shaped like a blue star is exactly what we need to make our garden an attractive site. Not only is it eye-catching but Borage comes with a lot of benefits which makes it ideal to have.

Borage is said to be grown in various parts of Europe, which makes me wonder if it grows on Asian soil? I guess it does since it is fairly easy to grow as it has the capability of self-pollination, so if you do happen to grow this plant in your garden, you will find it spreading around your garden fairly easily, so one does not need to worry about growing it again and again and putting in a lot of effort. And it is also a good companion to the other plants. A plant which is not only pretty but kind and protective towards the others…Borage is full of surprises.

Each part of the plant is not only pretty to look at but it is of some benefit. The leaves of Borage are furry, but if you do not use them soon, they would tend to become prickly; kind of like my boyfriend when I don’t spend time with him. So it is best to use to them quickly, otherwise you will be wasting a perfectly beneficial ingredient.

Food

Talking about the star-shaped flower, it is no doubt that it is one of the most attractive flowers, and since it is full of benefits, it often happens to be an ingredient used for garnishing, so people can reap its health benefits all the while eating a beautiful dish. But as beautiful as it is, it tastes delicious, which is why it is used in food—especially soups—in various parts of the world. Borage is often used for garnishing as well as in salads.

The leaves of this plant are considered to be good for garnishing and are often served with sauces and dips, which only adds to the overall flavor. It is advised to chop the leaves properly, while the stem can be cooked just like any other vegetable. If eaten alone, the taste of the leaves is said to resemble that of cucumbers. In that case, I should definitely give my mother some, since she loves the taste of cucumbers.

Health Benefits

However, as I said before, it’s not only beautiful but has plenty of health benefits. Borage is often sold in the form of oil which is extracted from the seeds and the oil is the solution for a lot of skin and bone problems such as arthritis and other respiratory diseases and is also said to be beneficial for anyone who is suffering from jaundice. But you must consult your doctor before taking it as one can never ignore individual differences, and if one thing is a medicine for one person it can be poison to another, so always be careful.

Moreover, it is said to be fairly good as a blood thinner, however, if you do happen to have a blood disorder or any kind, it would not be suitable for you to use this as medication, as it might result in heavy loss of blood, due to its properties of being an anticlotting agent.

Also, Borage helps in many other health related issues such as gastric issues which include stomach cramps and diarrhea, as well as helping with respiratory issues such as asthma, and since it is already seen as an anticlotting agent, it also helps purify the blood. So the next time you feel as if your stomach is cramping up, or you have a wish for clean blood, keep in mind that Borage will help you in multiple ways.

The seeds of Borage are not the only useful part of it. In fact, everything ranging from the leaves to the petals is useful except for the root. The flowers are said to have antioxidant effects since it contains gamma linolenic acid, however, the excess of this can have adverse effects, so do not assume it will be safe for everyone and consulting your doctor is crucial.

Furthermore, Borage tends to have an impact on a person’s mind as well. In some cases, this star-flower is said to make the mind happy, and relieve the person of his sorrows. Which is another reason why this plant should be a must have for your garden, because who wouldn’t want their sorrows to go away? The next time I feel sad, I am going to indulge in some Borage and forget my worries for a while. And in this time and world where mental health issues prevail and are spreading like the plague, this herb would be fairly useful in making people happy, which is what we all want at the end of the day.

Though there are numerous benefits of this star-flower, one needs to be careful because too much of one thing can be harmful. Moreover, it will be a beautiful addition to the garden, creating a peaceful environment which is good for the heart and mind.

So the next time you want to make something healthy for yourself or for your loved ones, using Borage as an ingredient would surely bring multiple benefits. You can find some delicious recipes by clicking here.

Even though I haven’t had any personal experience with this herb, after researching about it, I think I should have this in my garden, because of all the benefits and the unique shape of this plant. Borage would surely be an instant attraction. And let’s not forget how happy this is going to make me when the world is out to destroy my peace, this beautiful plant will surely bring me some peace.
